Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence – 2019

The Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Higher Degree by Research Supervision.

Our own lab director Melanie Takarangi won the prestigious award for Excellence in Supervision. Melanie was nominated by all of her current and past postgraduate students. Melanie was recognised for her outstanding HDR supervision and her rapidly growing number of PhD completions.

Melanie’s work with her HDR students involves encouragement and enthusiasm about their lines of research. She does this by cultivating a highly cohesive and productive lab environment, which inspires peer support and teamwork that is often absent from the HDR experience. Melanie has created a motivated research-focused lab, in which students learn from her and from each other. All of this and more is why Melanie won this award this year. Importantly, Melanie is the first female winner of this award, and the also the first person to take home the award before reaching the level of Professor at Flinders University.
