Alex Cartney

I am currently completing my Honours year in the Cognitive and Clinical Curiosity Lab, supervised by Dr. Victoria Bridgland. My thesis investigates whether media guides that warn about posttraumatic stress-like symptoms improve or worsen outcomes for people who read negative news stories. Specifically, I’m interested in how the framing of debriefing materials either normalises distress as a common response, or pathologizes a person’s response by highlighting clinical symptoms. As a consequence, I’m curious about how this framing shape’s people’s interpretations of their emotional reactions, self-reported symptom severity and memory for a potentially distressing event.

In my free time I love spending time with my family, friends and my dog (Finn), whilst being outdoors. My favourite places include Rapid Bay, and Kuitpo Forest!
